This is what’s written on the sarcophagus on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier located at Arlington National Cemetery.

Whether we know the name or not, as a nation, we must remember and honor every Servicemember who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this country. On this #MemorialDay and every day, we all are privileged to live in this nation.

As I sat in the Pentagon one day, I was thinking about my 36 years of service and how many Servicemembers that have died during my time. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲, 𝐈 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬.

𝐈 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐕𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐞. Once when their heart stops and the other when 𝐖𝐄 stop saying their name.

Although our heroes no longer reside with us in the physical form, we must honor and protect their memory, service, and sacrifice, so they will live forever.
