The last Monday of May honors and mourns members of the US armed forces who died serving the country.

Memorial Day is how we honor the soldiers, sailors, airmen, airwomen, and Marines who did not return home. The holiday dates back to the months immediately following the Civil War when a few towns and cities began honoring their dead.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

We remember and honor the courageous individuals who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Memorial Day is dedicated only to those who died in battle or after injuries sustained in battle, rather than active-duty soldiers or living veterans. But, that should not stop you from honoring a vet today any any other day you see one, no special day is needed.

Most holidays we state Happy.... for many it might feel awkward, so what can I you instead of Happy Memorial Day?

If you are struggling with the proper thing to say, here are a few alternatives: I wish you a meaningful Memorial Day. I hope you enjoy your weekend, and pause to remember its purpose. Help remember those who have served on this Memorial Day.

For others who question So, can you say "Happy Memorial Day?" Yes, of course, you can... especially if it comes from a place of grateful joy for the life we live today that was provided by the sacrifices of generations before.
