History of America's Rifle after changes were made to the M16A1 after lessons were learned during the Vietnam War.
Comparisons between the M16 and AK47 is unfair and childish thing gun n00bs tend to do when they only have experience with one platform or the other, and these types of people always assume whatever they own is better than what they don't own and venomously defend it in an ignorant, egotistical and non-scientific way, usually relying on internet myth and FUD legend.

When I see someone doing this it tells me they are inexperienced, closed-minded and hyper-focused on the only thing they do own having to be the best thing in the world to satisfy their fragile ego.

Having a great deal of experience with both platforms, it is an apples to oranges comparison due to the philosophy of use and situations these weapons were designed for. Both platforms can be used for the same thing, but excel in different areas.

The AK47 was designed to fill a gap between the submachinegun and the rifle, but leaned heavily towards being a submachinegun first and foremost, that can also function as a rifle if needed. The AK was focused towards conscript soldiers that were illiterate and uneducated and needed a simple, mass produced, unbreakable gun that would be used in human wave attacks firing on full auto to overwhelm enemy positions. The AK is focused on reliability in adverse environments with little upkeep using cheaply-made, disposable, steel cased ammunition that varies wildly in quality.

The AR/M16 was designed to be a marksman's rifle that could also be used as a machinegun if the situation arose. The AR was designed for well trained and educated troops with a plethora of ammunition types for mission specific engagements. American military has a strong focus on marksmanship, tactics and trying to preserve the lives of soldiers who took money and time to train, educate and equip. The AR is focused on accuracy, reliability in adverse environments with ability to clean and upkeep the weapon system, utilizing high-quality, reloadable, brass cased ammunition with tight quality controls.

Both are amazing weapons that will live on for a century or longer. But if I had my choice between the 2, it would be an AR type rifle over an AK any day of the week, due to its modularity, long distance accuracy using high velocity rounds over bullet hosing an area with bigger slower-moving rounds. In Semi-Auto ONLY civilian versions, this preference is even more pronounced.
