The Mega Man X series (Rockman X in Japan) was the second franchise in the Mega Man series. It was released on December 17, 1993 in Japan (and January 19, 1994 in North America) on the Super Nintendo, continuing its diverse sequels through re-releases on multiple platforms. X and over time, ignoring the warnings left on the capsule by Dr. Light, managed to manufacture his own robots, based on X's design, also endowed with free will, called Reploids.
The series takes place in the year 21XX, when Dr. Cain, a famous paleontologist, was participating in an excavation in search of a plant fossil and accidentally found Dr. Thomas Light (from the previous Mega Man series). To his surprise, amid the wreckage of the old laboratory, Cain found a robot called Mega Man X in a diagnostic capsule, in which it had been sealed for at least 30 years of testing, taking into account the potential danger of such a model. Mega Man X (called ‘‘X’’) had the power to make his own decisions, which surprised the paleontologist. doctor Cain then dedicates himself to studying X and over time, ignoring the warnings left in the capsule by Dr. Light, managed to manufacture his own robots, based on X's design, also endowed with free will, called Reploids.

But somehow, many of the Reploids created by Cain began to rebel and attack humans. These evil Reploids call themselves Mavericks (it is later revealed that the reason they rebelled is a virus created by Dr. Willy, and also implanted the robot called Zero. With this, the Maverick Hunters were created, a group formed by Reploids allied with the human race, who would be responsible for controlling occurrences with Mavericks.

Sigma, a Reploid of great capabilities, was chosen to be the leader of the Maverick Hunters (Hunters of Mavericks). Sigma firmly led and controlled the situation, until he too became one of them, and the other side declared the Maverick War against the humans and reploids. X took the initiative to join the Maverick Hunters under their new leader, Zero, on a mission to save Earth from Sigma. Over the course of the series, X, Zero, and later Axl—a prototype of the next generation of Reploids—battle Sigma and his Maverick followers to stop their various plots to destroy the human race.
