I taste a liquor never brewed,
From tankards scooped in pearl;
Not all the vats upon the Rhine
Yield such an alcohol!
Inebriate of air am I,
And debauchee of dew,
Reeling, through endless summer days,
From inns of molten blue.
When landlords turn the drunken bee
Out of the foxglove’s door,
When butterflies renounce their drams,
I shall but drink the more!
Till seraphs swing their snowy hats,
And saints to windows run,
To see the little tippler
Leaning against the sun!

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was an American poet known for her enigmatic and deeply introspective poetry. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, Dickinson lived a reclusive life, rarely leaving her home and choosing to communicate with the outside world mainly through her letters and poetry. She lived during a time of great societal and religious change, and her views on spirituality were shaped by her Puritan upbringing, her experiences, and her unique perspectives on life.
Dickinson's spirituality was complex and unconventional. She questioned traditional religious beliefs and rejected the dogmas of the organized church. Instead, she sought to understand the divine through her own personal experiences and observations of nature. Her poetry often reflects a deep sense of wonder and awe towards the natural world, which she saw as a manifestation of the divine. She saw God's presence in the smallest details of nature, from a buzzing bee to a blooming flower, and her poetry often celebrates the beauty and mystery of the natural world as a source of spiritual inspiration.
At the same time, Dickinson grappled with existential questions and the concept of mortality. She often wrote about the fleeting nature of life, the passage of time, and the inevitability of death. Despite her unconventional views on religion, Dickinson's poetry often reflects a sense of longing for a connection with the divine and a desire for spiritual transcendence. She explored themes of faith, doubt, and the search for meaning in a complex and ever-changing world.
Although Dickinson's poetry was largely unrecognized during her lifetime, she is now considered one of the most important American poets. Her unique perspective on spirituality, her bold exploration of existential questions, and her innovative poetic style continue to captivate readers and inspire scholars and poets alike. Emily Dickinson's legacy as a visionary poet continues to thrive, and her contributions to American literature and spirituality are celebrated to this day.
