NEW LEXUS RX - MID-SIZE LUXURY HYBRID COMPACT 2023
The fifth generation Lexus RX was improved in every aspect, and you should really consider it if you are looking for a luxury crossover
The fifth generation Lexus RX arrived in 2022 to replace a model that stayed in production for only six years. When compared to the model it replaces, the 2023 Lexus RX is built on a new platform, features a new look and an improved cabin, and most importantly, has more fuel-efficient engines. Initially, it will only be offered in RX 350, RX 350h, and RX 500h F Sport, but a RX 450h+ will be added to the lineup later on. Is the new Lexus RX right for you, though? Well, here’s what you need to know about it.
Now in its fifth generation, the Lexus RX is offered with your choice of gasoline and hybrid engines. The entry-level 2023 Lexus RX 350 is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Next in line, we have the 2023 Lexus RX 350h - a model powered by a hybrid motor coupled with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. The hybrid system delivers a combined 246 horsepower and 233 pound-feet of torque and is coupled to a nickel-metal hydride battery that helps improve the fuel economy. The top-of-the-line is the 2023 Lexus RX 500h F Sport Performance. The front axle is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 271 horsepower. In the back, there’s an 80-kW eAxle that consists of an inverter and a motor. In total, the hybrid system delivers a combined 366 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Later, Lexus will also offer an RX 450h+ model - the first plug-in hybrid model in the RX lineup. It will combine a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an 18.1-kWh lithium-ion battery and an E-Four motor placed on the rear axle.
For the 2023 model year, U.S. customers will have to choose between ten different grades, and even if the prices for the luxury crossover start at an affordable level, they can get expensive very fast. The gasoline-powered 2023 Lexus RX 350 has four different trims, and both FWD and AWD configurations, plus the RX 350 F Sport Handling which only comes in an AWD configuration. The entry-level, simply called RX 350 is priced at $48,550.
The 2023 Lexus RX is not by any means the most powerful or the cheapest mid-sized luxury crossover out there. In fact, pretty much every competitor it has delivers a little bit more power. Take the Acura MDX, for example. In the base trim it is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The MDX Type S, however, is a little bit less powerful than the RX 500h with only 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet. The same goes for the 2023 Infiniti QX60 - it is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 295 horses and 270 pound-feet. Even the recently launched Genesis GV70 delivers more power than the RX: its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5-liter twin-turbo engine goes up to an even more impressive 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. With 247 horsepower under the hood, it is only the Volvo XC60 that is currently placed under the Lexus RX. The same goes when it comes to prices: the 2023 Lexus RX is placed somewhere in the middle. The Genesis GV70 and the Volvo XC60 are cheaper at $42,900 and $43,450, respectively, while the Acura MDX and the Infiniti QX60 are a little bit more expensive at $49,550 and $49,200.
