Acts 21 The Second Missionary Journey Thessalonica, Berea, Athens 17:1-34

Let's see how far we can get tonight. I had planned to stop at Acts 17:9 and delve into 1 Thessalonians, since it was written after this visit. However, I think it's more accurate to keep going until Acts 18:5 where Paul is in Corinth. This is where he wrote 1 Thessalonians from, immediately after Timothy's report of how they were doing. This will give us better historical background.

Tonight there are three places Paul visited:

Thessalonica is where Paul was persecuted by many Jews who opposed his teaching that Jesus was the Messiah. Paul only spent about three to four weeks in Thessalonica when he was driven out suddenly. Those who believed were also persecuted in the months to come. About three months later Paul wrote his first letter to them to encourage and strengthen them with the doctrine of the RAPTURE.

Berea is where there were people who were more open-minded and examined the Scriptures daily to see whether Jesus really was the Messiah. Many believed.

Athens is where the gospel was given to the intellectual elite. Paul presents God as the creator, transcendent, immanent, sovereign, who has sent a Man who will judge the world as proven by His resurrection.

Hope to see you tonight. Bring prayer requests. Do not grow weary in your prayer life as Jesus' disciples did. We have to keep disciplining ourselves to make our requests to Him. We can do, do, do, but if we don't pray, pray, pray, nothing supernatural happens, we become tired, and we lose hope.

See the attached notes.

Grace to you,
Jeremy
