AFTER AMARAL - THE FORBIDDEN INVESTIGATION

EVIDENCE INDICATING AMARAL WAS REMOVED AS CHIEF INVESTIGATOR TO PREVENT HIM BRINGING MARTIN SMITH TO PORTUGAL IN EARLY OCTOBER 2007 AND TO PREVENT A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION OF THE SMITH SIGHTING

In September 2007 Martin Smith contacted police to say he had grave concerns that Gerry McCann may have been the man he saw carrying a girl he was convinced could have been Madeleine, down a street just 400 metres away from the McCann's holiday apartment at 10pm on May 3rd 2007.

Amaral - "Everyone of us on the investigation thought that lead was important"

Interviewer - "But if everyone thought it was so important, why was the sighting not properly pursued"

Amaral - "When I left the investigation there was a gap and the man who came to replace me discarded that hypothesis. He didn't want to follow that lead."

By September 2007 the PJ had taken statements from at least 9 independent eye witnesses that placed Gerry McCann away from the tapas table at 10pm, the time of the Smith Sighting.

By the time the investigation was shelved without properly pursuing Smith sighting there were at least 10 independent witness statements that placed Gerry McCann away from the tapas table at 10pm.

Interviewer - "The Smith family is fundamental?"

Amaral - "Exactly, the Smith family was so fundamental that we tried to bring them to Portugal ..... it is at that moment that we are trying to bring them to Portugal in early October ... What happened was with booked flights, only needed to book a hotel, I was removed from the investigation and this diligence never happened"

Martin Smith never heard directly from the PJ again despite there being evidence that corroborated his grave concerns

After Amaral was replaced the PJ sent Irish police questions for Martin Smith to answer in Ireland

In July 2008 the investigation was shelved without properly pursuing the Smith sighting, despite the fact there were 10 independent witness statements which corroborated Martin Smith's testimony.

The PJ's final report states "It was established that at the time that was being mentioned, GERALD McCANN was sitting at the table, in the Tapas Restaurant."

To which Amaral commented:

"It cannot be that way, because nobody knows for sure at what time the things happened... The employees do not state Gerry McCann was in the restaurant"

Only the tapas nine statements place Gerry McCann at the tapas table at 10pm.

Sept 9th - Martin Smith has grave concerns Gerry McCann may have been the man he saw carrying a girl that could have been Madeleine at 10pm on May 3rd 2007

Sept 20th - Martin Smith contacts UK Police

Sept 27th - Martin Smith speaks with the PJ and agrees to travel to Portugal to do what he can to help with the investigation

Arrangements are made and flights are booked

October 2nd - Amaral is removed as chief investigator

October 11th - Paolo Rebelo replaces Amaral as chief investigator. He discards Martin Smith's testimony despite the fact there are 10 independent witness statements that place Gerry McCann away from the tapas table at 10pm that night

November 7th - PJ send questions for Martin Smith

July 2008 - The investigation is shelved despite the independent evidence

All this evidence indicates Goncalo Amaral was sacrificed as Chief Investigator to save Gerry McCann from investigation

A move which destroyed Amaral's career, reputation and personal life and prevented a full and proper investigation into what happened to Madeleine McCann.

Amaral only followed the evidence to seek out justice for a 3 yr old girl
