The Freedom of Russia Legion stated that the purpose of the raid in Belgorod region was "to create a demilitarized zone between Russia and Ukraine, to destroy the security forces that serve the Putin regime, and to demonstrate to the peoples of Russia that a successful struggle against the Putin regime is possible."

The Legion added that on May 22, they managed to defeat the FSB forces, and on May 23, they destroyed a motorized rifle company of the Russian army.
