- Brief -

Pataké is an expression of the journey SinghMahoon has taken navigating his experiences as a Sikh that has awoken to the realities around him. He is no longer an unwilling/willing subject in the conspiracy and the mystery perpetuated by those that are perceived to have power. He has awoken through GurBāni and now realises the power that the Gūrū has bestowed upon him and the expectations that are placed. This is defined through Khalistan (Azādi) and the way towards that - Pataké.

A Pataka is not only a firework but an explosion and a realisation.

In colloquial Punjabi, Pataké refers to the possession of firearms and their use in “situations” (this use can be either self-serving when in ego, or for the benefit of the Panth, but sometimes the lines are blurred, and one feeds into the other).

A Patakā not only occurs in the moment as an explosive act, but there is also a Patakāin the moment of realisation, like the crack of a whip makes the “masters” power known, it also serves to awaken within the oppressed that which is being oppressed - the divine self.

Given the context of representing Khalistan, Pataké speaks as a term that breeds parallels, born of the diaspora, it provokes the mind to reach for similar colloquial Sikh expressions tied to Sikhi and revolution that exist as expressions of Sikh feeling and thought, as memories of attitudes of power we hold as a sovereign people.

Pataké investigates the duality that we all face, and how the pursuit of Azādi is countered or aligned by our own experiences and realities - the realisation that we are living as a fractured people, as a diaspora, and we pursue a Sikh reality - KHALISTAN - Shamsher Singh​
