Lisa Steinberg was a tragic victim of child abuse whose case received significant media attention in the late 1980s. Lisa was born on June 14, 1980, and on November 1, 1987, she was found unconscious in her Manhattan apartment. It was later revealed that she had suffered severe physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her adoptive parents, Joel Steinberg and Hedda Nussbaum.

Lisa Steinberg was taken to the hospital in critical condition but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries on November 5, 1987, at the age of 6. Her death sparked outrage and raised public awareness about child abuse and the failures of the child welfare system.

Following Lisa's death, her adoptive father, Joel Steinberg, was arrested and charged with manslaughter and assault. In a highly publicized trial, he was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in 1989 and sentenced to 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison. Hedda Nussbaum, Lisa's adoptive mother, was also arrested and charged with child endangerment but was later granted immunity in exchange for her testimony against Steinberg.

The tragic case of Lisa Steinberg had a profound impact on child welfare laws and the treatment of child abuse cases in the United States. It shed light on the importance of protecting vulnerable children and prompted reforms in child protective services and the legal system.
