The Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Florida is no joke. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is the steepest bridge in the USA, tallest in Florida, and one of the longest bridges in the World. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is famous for being the longest cable-stayed concrete bridge in the world. It has a vertical clearance of 190 feet above the Tampa Bay and is 430 feet tall at its highest point on the bridge towers.

The Skyway is also one of the deadliest bridges. On May 9, 1980, 35 people traveling southbound across the Sunshine Skyway Bridge died after plunging into Tampa Bay, unaware that the structure had partially collapsed after being struck by a ship only moments before. One man survived the incident after a 1,400-foot piece of concrete roadway fell 150 feet into the water along with eight vehicles, including a bus.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge was rebuilt, bigger, taller, more structurally sound. What's left of the old Skyway Bridge (minus the main span) is still in tact and used as a very long fishing pier. What is not known until you see it and have to pass over it, is how steep it is! The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is the steepest bridge in the USA so hauling a trailer over is no joke. At max tow capcity and an undersided truck we are asking for trouble!

You have to go over this bridge to understand, but its steep and a bit scary driving over. We are at max towing capacity for our Travel Trailer and have an undersized truck.
