Syria's President Assad Returns to Arab League Summit After 12-Year Suspension

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will attend the Arab League summit for the first time in 12 years, despite being shunned by many leaders due to the violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests that led to the civil war. Syria's readmission to the regional body was facilitated by states accepting Assad's grip on power and providing humanitarian aid after the devastating earthquake in February.

The restoration of diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, brokered by China, also played a role in normalizing relations with the Syrian government. While Assad's forces have regained control of major cities, significant parts of Syria remain held by rebel groups, jihadists, and Kurdish-led militias, leading to a high number of displaced people and a dire humanitarian situation.

Do you believe Syria's readmission to the Arab League will contribute to finding a resolution to the conflict and promoting stability in the region?
