As many as 32 monks are undergoing the Thudong ritual on foot from Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand to Borobudur Temple, Magelang, Central Java. They made this trip to celebrate Vesak at Borobudur Temple. Vesak, which is a Buddhist religious holiday falls on June 4, 2023. They started their Thudong ritual journey since March 25, 2023 with the Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Indonesia route and are targeted to arrive at Borobudur on June 2. Then, why did the monks who came from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia choose to walk to get to Borobudur Temple? Thudong itself is a religious journey whose implementation must be done on foot. This walking ritual is known to have been a tradition since hundreds of years ago. The purpose of walking from Thailand to Indonesia is a form of religious travel. Along the way, the needs of 32 monks were met by Buddhists from various regions. However, the warm welcome to these monks did not only come from Buddhists, but also people of other religions. Previously, these monks entered Indonesia from Batam, Riau Archipelago Province. The walking route for the 32 monks is Batam-Jakarta-Bekasi-Cikarang-Karawang-Cikampek-Pamanukan-Kandanghaur-Jatibarang-Cirebon-Losari-Tegal-Pemalang-Pekalongan-Banyuputih-Kendal-Semarang-Ambarawa-Magelang. The total distance traveled by the 32 monks is estimated at 2,600 km. Usually those who perform the Thudong ritual are experienced monks. In order to support this ritual running smoothly and successfully, a car was alerted to follow the journey of these 32 monks. This trip has also broken the MURI record.
