At least 12 civilians and three United Nations personnel were killed as protests against UN peacekeeping forces (MONUSCO) turned violent in eastern DR Congo on Tuesday.
The Congolese government confirmed the fatalities on Tuesday night, saying up to 50 had also been injured, after demonstrations spread to neighbouring Beni and Butembo.
The east of DR Congo sees frequent clashes between government forces and armed groups. The UN deployment is one of its largest peacekeeping missions, with around 16,000 troops, but has been criticised for failing to protect civilians.
