Democrats Fighting Back Against Right-Wing's Dangerous Abortion Legislation Wave

Nebraska State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh spoke on the Senate floor in Lincoln against a proposal by the Legislature to pair an abortion ban and gender-affirming care into one larger piece of legislation. She called out Republican members by name as liars, because they will not add any amendments or exceptions to the bill that would protect vulnerable people.

Cavanaugh said to her Republican colleagues: "Women will die. Children are dying. It is your fault. If you vote for this, you will have buckets and buckets of blood on your hands."

Meanwhile, South Carolina State Representative Jermaine Johnson Jr. spoke out against a proposed 6-week abortion ban in the state legislature on Tuesday. Johnson accused state Republicans of being "pro-birth" and not "pro-life" because they support women having children but do not support policies that would help those children after they are born, such as expanding child support or Medicaid.

"If we're pro-life and life begins at conception, like a lot of you all are in here saying, then child support should begin at conception," Johnson said. "If you're going to force a woman to have a child, then you should be willing to help her raise that child."

Johnson's comments come as the Republican-controlled South Carolina legislature is considering a number of bills that would restrict access to abortion in the state. The 6-week abortion ban is one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country. If it is passed, it would ban abortion before many women even know they are pregnant.
