Nigerian Head Of State, Major-General Yakubu Gowon, Visiting The Lagos Docks | May 1970

The operation of the port was taken over by the military nearly three weeks earlier after more than 20 ships were waiting to get to the wharves. The backlog was down to 11 ships on Thursday and the Head of State promised dock workers a 25 per cent salary bonus if the work was cleared in two months. He said he was delighted with the progress made by the commission, under wartime leader Colonel Benjamin Adekunle, to speed up work at the docks.

Cargo passing through the docks in the previous three weeks brought in a revenue of £7.8 million (sterling) and the tonnage handled was considerably increased from 1969. Turnaround time for ships had been cut from 28 days to 17 days since a military commission handling the problem was set up.
