"GERMAN FIRM PUTS RICH ON FREEWAY TO FANTASY
PALM BEACH -- Caressing the silky leather steering wheel, you flick into action a living-color video of rear-view traffic as music wafts from a sound system with 18-karat gold knobs. "Open the door, the car smells like a Gucci shoebox," said Rudi Neidhardt, describing his firm's line of customized cars, designed to set classy owners a class apart from others rich and famous. Such was part of the thinking when Gemballa of Germany decided to open its first American office on this fantasy resort island about a month ago. This week, Gemballa U.S.A. Inc., 205 Worth Ave., is displaying some of its sleek creations, realized fantasies of the very, very rich.
Shown at the Esplanade, the cars range in price from a $108,000 Gemballa Carrera Turbo Look Convertible (jet black with red interior) to a $225,000 Gemballa Avalanche (flaming red with white interior). "The $200,000 guy," said Neidhardt, executive director of the new American headquarters, "is the kind of guy who wants to have the first car of that kind in the United States. "These are people who are very, very wealthy, and they want to have something over the competition. We're not just catering to the rich and famous, but people who want to set themselves apart." And what better place than Palm Beach than to do business? "I like the atmosphere here," said Neidhardt, 39, a native German who most recently represented Gemballa in Malibu, Calif. "People have class and affluence. They appreciate the best of the best the world has to offer." And Gemballa, Neidhardt asserted in a booming and excited voice, only deals in the best. Like the mansion row residents here, Gemballa's clients are business moguls, movie stars, politicians and heiresses. Since 1980, the firm has sold about 200 cars in the United States through independent representatives. They have been replaced by the Palm Beach office. Whether creating a new car or remaking an old one, Gemballa deals only with Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces.
"Whatever it costs, it is always worth the money because we're using the finest materials from the best stock," said Neidhardt. One Arab sheik was happy to pay $200,000 for the Rolls of his dream: candy- apple red, cream silk interior, bar, video system, television and burlwood tray tables. Other possibilities: water buffalo leather interior, mouton floor mats, velour-lined trunks. The latter, Neidhardt noted, are handy because "you can put your Polo or Mondi suits right in them." Want a convertible? Gemballa can include a heavy-duty hidden safe. Said Neidhardt: "At the beach, you can throw all your jewelry and cassettes into the safe, and your convertible sits there looking great." But looks are not the only key to the company's success. For $45,000 to $150,000, clients can have their own luxury cars completely rebuilt from the inside out at Gemballa's plant in West Germany. "They work with the guts of your car," said Neidhardt. "It's like turning everything back to zero. It brings back the sizzle. You get excited again." All of this can be done swiftly and flawlessly, Neidhardt declared, because the 8-year-old firm lies near Stuttgart, where the world's Mercedes and Porsches are manufactured." Â
