EV trailer towing with my Volvo XC-40 Recharge

my work van blew an engine and I had to get a customer 120 km away from Kamloops to Clearwater BC, a wood stove for heat bc he had no heat bc his furnace broke down. So I hooked up my sled trailer to my 2021 Volvo XC-40 Recharge full-electric SUV. I got a trailer hitch installed when I leased it so I can use it to pull my sled and boat trailer. I never thought I'd be using it for work.

It was -5 at night, -1 when we left early in the morning, and slowly warming to about +2 during the peak of the day, so not exactly optimal conditions for the EV. The range was reduced from the cold by about 20%, I usually get about 275 km in the real-world distance on a charge, though with the extra weight of around 1500lbs and the cold temperatures I was reduced to about 200km +/-.

Here in Canada, there are government-sponsored level three EV chargers on the main highways that are actually free to use, I can potentially go all the way across Canada for free and without producing any smog, oil drips or pollution. I feel good about that after having worked firsthand in the automotive business for almost 20 years, knowing exactly what toxic crap and emissions are produced by ICE vehicles.

Overall the Volvo XC-40 recharge has been great, and though it has its drawbacks in extremely cold weather, I have driven it to my family's home for Christmas 2022 100km away and back in the same day in -25 Celsius weather. There was some anxiety at the time, I'm not lying bc it was a first. I have charged it in -25 weather as well, and though it does slow down the charge, I was able to do so with no problems using a level three charger.

overall I was impressed with the performance of towing the trailer that day, I only needed to stop once for a charge, taking about 45 minutes to get it to 85% from 50% that day when it was about +2. When it reaches 80% the charger slows down, I could have left it at 80'%, but I wasn't in a rush, so I hung out for extra piece of mind.

don't fall for the propaganda that claims you can't charge in cold weather, that EV's can't tow and are unreliable. it does take some attention to detail and planning, but for this being the very first SUV all-wheel drive SUV on the market EVER, its doing pretty well.

The Future of EV's are bright, wich increases in technology, battery manufacturing and even shifting away from lithium, distance and reliability are jumping leaps and bounds each year.

I did a little research on the history of EV's, and to my shock and amazement I learnt as early as 1850 EV's dominated as ways of transport and delivery vehicles until Rockefeller manipulated and bribed governments to "kill the electric car" back in the early 1900's.

During their peak in 1909, the Babcock EV had a range of over 1200 MILES; As a mechanic and engineer I can appreciate how EV's could have been the standard if it weren't for capitalists manipulating society to what we are experiencing today with the smog frying the ozone, contaminating every living thing on the planet from fossil fuels and the destruction of the world through climate change brought on by evil greedy capitalists who only thought of themselves controlling profit and manipulating society.
