Date – Wednesday, May 17th - 2023 – St. Paschal Baylon

St. Paschal Baylon, a Spanish shepherd born in the Kingdom of Aragon in the 16th century, demonstrated a profound devotion to the Blessed Sacrament throughout his life. As a youth, he attended Mass whenever possible and, when unable to do so, he would kneel in the fields and adore the Elevation of the Blessed Sacrament as the nearby church bell rang. At the age of 24, he joined the Discalced Franciscans in Villareal, where his fervor for the Eucharist continued to burn brightly.

During his final moments on Earth, St. Paschal received the Holy Viaticum and inquired if Mass had begun in the Monastery Chapel. Upon learning that the Elevation was imminent, he awaited the sound of the small bells. At that sacred moment, he exclaimed, "My Jesus!" and peacefully passed away.

Remarkable miracles accompanied St. Paschal even after his death. During his funeral, his corpse, When the priest elevated the Chalice, the lifeless body mirrored the movement. Later, his remains were positioned near the Main Altar, and whenever Mass was celebrated on that altar, sounds of movement emanated from his coffin, inviting the faithful to deepen their devotion and adore the Holy Sacrament.

These ongoing manifestations of St. Paschal Baylon's love for the Eucharist serve as a testament to his heroic virtue and intimate connection with the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. They also carry a polemical value, countering the Protestant denial of the Real Presence prevalent during the time of the Reformation.
