At a news conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, representatives of several advocacy groups call on the federal government to recognize May 15 as Nakba Day, the annual Palestinian commemoration of their mass displacement in 1948 during the establishment of Israel. The speakers are also calling on Canada to urge Israel to free Palestinian prisoner Ahmad Manasra, who has been held in custody since 2015 when he was 13 years old.
Taking part in the news conference are Ghada Sasa, a board member of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, Corey Balsam, national coordinator of Independent Jewish Voices Canada, and Dorothy Herbert, Presbyterian diaconal minister and member of the nation-wide coalition “Canada, Stand Up for Palestinian Children’s Rights”.
