Rep. Katie Porter: 'I’m Sure the WH Counsel Office Is Taking a Look at the 14th Amendment'

PSAKI: “No doubt the public does not want these type of cuts. But if these cuts are attached to it and you’re a trained lawyer, one of the many things in your background, do you think the better option would be for the president to invoke the 14th Amendment to raise the debt limit, if it came to that?”

PORTER: “I’m sure the White House is in the business right now of trying to think that through to understand what that tool would look like, it’s not something that we’ve done before. I do think the best path forward is for Congress to come up with a strong solution here, for us to do our job on a bipartisan basis. But the 14th Amendment exists for a reason. It is there, in part to make sure that this kinds of politics and these kinds of games are not played, that the United States meets its obligations. So I think it’s a backstop. I don’t think we’re there yet. But I’m sure the White House Counsel Office is very, very busy this weekend, taking a look at the 14th Amendment.”
