This woman is the future of Thai Democracy

Paetongtarn Shinawatra is the daughter of a former prime minister and tycoon who was ousted in a military coup in 2006. Parties linked to the Shinawatra family have won every Thai election since 2001. These political parties are pursing democracy and to limit the military’s power.
The current prime minister is Prayuth Chan-ocha, a 69 year old former general who seized power in a 2014 military coup. Mr. Prayuth’s administration has been defined by incompetence and corruption. Thailand has had the slowest economy recovery from covid of all South East Asia.
Thais are no openly debating politics at the dinner table and in public. This is in a country where talking poorly of the king can land you 15 years in prison.
Even if the opposition wins, the constitution favors the military junta. Thailand’s senate is packed with military loyalists and they have an outsized role in choosing the prime military. To win, the opposition would need to win three times as many seats in the lower house as the pro military candidate.
