Stray gathering becomes necessary on a cattle ranch when cattle get out of their home pastures. They may need to be immobilized to check for communicable health problems or await the arrival of a trailer for transport back to the proper pasture. The Clarendon Outdoor Entertainment Association (COEA) opened Independence Day festivities with a July Fourth Junior Ranch Rodeo. Five-member teams representing ten working ranches in the region demonstrating their working ranch skills.

The Saint's Roost Independence Day Celebration has been held in Clarendon, Texas for 145 years.
