Date – Tuesday, May 9th - 2023 – St. Pachomius

The life of St. Pachomius the Great provides a valuable lesson on the importance of spiritual vigilance and interpreting small actions as indicators of deeper spiritual states. In his monastery, a monk made two straw mats instead of one, seeking praise for his diligence. However, St. Pachomius recognized the monk's vanity and admonished him.

As a penance, the Saint instructed the monk to wear the two mats on his back during community prayer, publicly confessing his attachment to them over the Kingdom of Heaven. The monk was further required to carry the mats during the meal and endure six months of seclusion, fasting on bread and water while making two mats daily.

This story reveals the ancient Fathers' practice of severe penances for even minor faults, which their subordinates accepted with humility and used for spiritual growth. It also highlights the need for vigilance in discerning small symptoms of vice that can have significant implications.

St. Pachomius reminds us to interpret these symptoms in ourselves, others, and society at large, helping us recognize the forces of revolution and counter-revolution. Through his example, we are called to remain vigilant, combat vice, and appreciate the profound impact of seemingly insignificant actions on our spiritual well-being.

St. Pachomius, Pray for us.
