👉1. Sakonnet Light is a historic lighthouse located on the eastern shore of Sakonnet Point in Little Compton, Rhode Island. It was first lit in 1884 to guide ships entering and leaving the Sakonnet River.
👉 2. The lighthouse was designed by architect and civil engineer William Ralph Emerson, who is known for designing many important buildings in the late 19th century, including the First Unitarian Church in Providence, Rhode Island, and the Beverly Farms Railroad Station in Massachusetts.
👉 3. The Sakonnet Light was originally built with a fourth-order Fresnel lens, which was powered by a weight-driven clockwork mechanism. The lens was later replaced with an automated light in 1958.
👉 4. During World War II, the Sakonnet Light was used as a lookout point by the U.S. Coast Guard to watch for enemy ships. The lighthouse was also used as a training facility for Coast Guard recruits during the war.
👉 5. Sakonnet Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1983, in recognition of its architectural and historical significance. Today, the lighthouse is owned by the town of Little Compton and is open to the public for tours during the summer months.
