The rape trial of former President Donald Trump brought by E. Jean Carroll, an advice columnist who accused Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s, has come to a close, and both sides have presented their final arguments. While Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, presented evidence to the jury that Trump didn't show up in court because "he knows what he did," Trump's defense attorney Joe Tacopina argued that Carroll's vagueness about the timing of the alleged attack made it difficult for his client to defend himself.

The video of Trump's deposition in October was played in court, where he mistakenly identified a photo of Carroll as his second wife Marla Maples, but later said the picture was blurry. Kaplan argued that Carroll was "exactly his type" and that Trump's comment about her not being his type indicated that she wasn't attractive enough to sexually assault. Kaplan then played a portion of the Access Hollywood tape in which Trump was heard boasting about sexually assaulting women. Subscribe for more content like this.

Tacopina maintained that his client denied attacking Carroll under oath and suggested that Carroll's vagueness about the timing of the alleged attack made it difficult for his client to defend himself. He also noted that Carroll's attorneys could have called Trump to testify, but they didn't. Tacopina asked the jury, "How do you prove a negative, how do you prove you didn't do it?" and questioned how Trump could defend himself against an attack that allegedly occurred on an unspecified evening in the latter part of 1995 or 1996.

Carroll is suing Trump for battery and defamation, and Trump has denied the allegations. His lawyers didn't present any witnesses, and he chose not to testify in the case. The jury will now decide whether Carroll's case against Trump will go to trial, and if so, whether the former president is guilty of the charges against him.
