Friend said the car engine just shuts off while driving. Tried starting it and it just keeps on turning over.
Sounds and feels like the engine is not getting any compression. It's turning over fairly easy. You can hear the starter spinning quickly.

From a loyal subscriber/tech, mkrp4:
Another sign of broken timing belt could be dead tachometer needle while cranking and no spark condition at all plugs (often misdiagnosed as faulty cam sensor)
Toyota waste spark system (Camry 97-2001)is using signal from CRANK sensor to generate rpm pulse so for this case the method above could not work.
The belt has failed too early. This usually happens if belt was sitting on the shelf for long time before sold and installed (common among E-Bay and Amazon purchased items)
some belts (like GoodYear Gatorback) have a date stamped on the box while others (Dayco) have a date included in its serial number (typically last 4 digits)
