From High-Speed Chase to Backyard Hide-and-Seek: The Dramatic Capture of a Felony Suspect
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A high-speed pursuit through the streets of Sacramento on Sunday afternoon ended with a man's arrest on felony charges, but not before a tense standoff with police in a residential neighborhood.
According to reports, officers received a "POD Hit" (License Plate Reader) at approximately 3 p.m. alerting them to a known, wanted felony vehicle in the South area of Sacramento. Officers and air support quickly saturated the area in search of the vehicle.
An officer spotted the suspect's vehicle in the parking lot of an Auto Zone on Florin Road near 29th Street, and observed that it appeared unoccupied. The officer kept an eye on the vehicle from a distance while additional officers and the helicopter for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office (STAR) arrived on the scene, waiting for the suspect to exit the store.
As the suspect emerged from the store and made his way to the vehicle, patrol units began to move in to execute a high-risk felony stop. However, the suspect managed to evade capture and led officers on a brief pursuit out onto Florin Road into oncoming traffic.
The pursuit eventually ended in a residential neighborhood, where the suspect fled on foot and attempted to evade police by jumping over fences and attempting to enter homes. Officers established a tight perimeter while a helicopter provided a bird's-eye view.
After several announcements from the helicopter, the suspect was warned that a K9 was being utilized and to surrender or he could be bitten. Eventually, the K9 was released, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
The Sacramento Fire Department was called to treat the suspect's bite wounds before he was transported to the hospital for further treatment.
In a statement, the Sacramento Police Department confirmed that the suspect had been arrested for related felony charges. No further details were immediately available.
