'white supremacy' and 'institutional violence' forces Washington school to cut music classes

The Olympia School District recently voted to eliminate music classes, specifically fourth- and fifth-grade band and orchestra, in response to a budget shortfall and concerns about racism. During the board meeting, School Board Director Scott Clifthorne stated that the district's elementary instrumental music courses were administered unevenly across different campuses, and that the OSD is entrenched in a culture of white supremacy. Clifthorne emphasized that instrumental music courses are not inherently white supremacist, but that they have the potential to perpetuate a racist culture within the district. However, some parents have criticized the decision, stating that the district is losing students due to the elimination of music classes. The cuts only apply to a music elective and not any secondary music courses. The school board plans to hold more meetings to address next year's budget.
