Pac 12: Is ESPN in or out for TV deal?

There have been conflicting reports about ESPN’s involvement in negotiations for the Pac 12’s primary media rights.

According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, ESPN is out of the running, with a Big 12 administrator confirming that ESPN has said it won’t be doing anything with the Pac-12. However, Ross Dellenger and Nicole Auerbach from Sports Illustrated and The Athletic respectively, have reported that ESPN is still involved and recently held discussions with the Pac-12.

The Pac-12 is seeking $200 million for its Tier 1 content, which equates to at least two games per week over 14 weeks, at $7 million per game. The Pac-12’s Tier 1 content is currently divided between ESPN and Fox, but the conference is seeking a partner for its next rights deal, which expires in 2024. The conflicting reports make it difficult to determine the current state of negotiations.

The Big 12 would benefit from ESPN being out of the picture as it would give it a better chance of luring Pac12 schools to join the conference in expansion and help fill Brett Yormark's desire for a fourth television window, thus continuing conference realignment.

However, the Pac-12 would benefit from ESPN’s involvement in negotiations as more bidders could drive up the price it receives for its media rights. There is also speculation that NBCUniversal could be involved, which could give the Pac-12 additional leverage in negotiations.
