About 25,000 residents were forced to abandon their homes after "unprecedented" wildfires ravaged the Canadian province of Alberta, BBC reported on Sunday.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced a state of emergency in the province, adding that it would allow the government to respond to extreme situations including mobilising additional resources and unlocking emergency funds.
