BREAKING NEWS: Trump Confuses E. Jean Carroll for Marla Maples in Deposition Video Shown at Trial
Jurors in the ongoing trial of former President Donald Trump heard testimony from witnesses and watched video footage of Trump's 2020 deposition, in which he was questioned about writer E. Jean Carroll's allegations of rape against him. The trial is the result of Carroll's lawsuit against Trump for defamation and battery after he denied her allegations and said that she "made up" the claims that he raped her in a New York City department store in the mid-1990s.
During the deposition, which was made public during the trial, Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan showed Trump a photo of him, his then-wife Ivana, Carroll and her ex-husband John Johnson, to which Trump initially said, "It's Marla," referring to his second wife, Marla Maples. After being corrected, he insisted that Carroll was "not my type" and that he didn't know her very well.
Trump's repeated claims that Carroll was not his type have been a focus of the trial, with jurors watching the footage of the deposition and hearing testimony from witnesses who have contradicted his claims. On Thursday, Carroll's friend Carol Martin testified that Carroll had told her about the alleged attack soon after it happened and that she had advised her not to report Trump to the police because "he would bury her." The trial has now seen both sides rest their cases, with Trump's attorney, Joe Tacopina, saying he won't call any witnesses, and waiving Trump's right to testify in the case. However, the judge has given Trump until Sunday to motion to appear, should he have second thoughts. The trial may conclude next week, and the judge has adjourned until Monday.
Tacopina's representation of Trump in his civil trial meant he was unable to attend a hearing two blocks away in Trump's state criminal case, in which Trump entered a not guilty plea to 34 counts of falsification of business records on April 4. Trump became the first former president in US history to be charged with crimes.
The trial of Trump's lawsuit with Carroll has been closely watched as it represents the first time a former US president has faced a civil suit for conduct that occurred before he took office. The case has drawn attention to the issue of sexual assault and harassment, and has highlighted the difficulties that victims face in seeking justice against powerful figures.
