We’ve finally had our first brief look at what Mortal Kombat 12 could have in store, with a recent teaser showing that the Sands of Time may return. Here’s why their involvement in the plot could be what the series needs to course correct.

Let me take you all back way over a decade to the release of Mortal Kombat in 2011. The first NetherRealm Studios game, which rose from the ashes of Midway Games, took things back to basics with a franchise that had run wildly out of control for nearly a decade at that point. For as much as I love Mortal Kombat, some of these mid-era games were seriously rough. Even Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, a fighting game that included every playable character to date and boasted the biggest story stakes seen yet, was still a massive disappointment.

Whether it was the switch to 3D which had occurred with the sloppy Mortal Kombat 4 or the piling on of gimmicks from Chess Kombat, Motor Kombat, and a progressively worsening Konquest mode, the franchise had seriously lost its way. That’s why Mortal Kombat (2011) felt so fresh. The 2D perspective returned and many of the series’ sins were washed away. From lore that few could keep up with anymore, to bloated and unnecessary gameplay additions, this title brought things back to basics at a time when it was needed the most - and it needs to happen again with Mortal Kombat 12.

Insider Claims
The rumour mill began churning when an alleged industry insider claimed to have information regarding the development of Mortal Kombat 12. According to this source, the development team at NetherRealm Studios has been working tirelessly on the next instalment of the franchise, and the game is reportedly nearing the final stages of development. This insider also suggested that Mortal Kombat 12 would be unveiled at the PlayStation Showcase event, leading fans to speculate about what could be in store.

NetherRealm Studios’ Cryptic Tweets
Adding fuel to the fire, NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind the Mortal Kombat series, has been posting cryptic tweets and messages on social media platforms, hinting at a possible announcement. These messages have included subtle references to the Mortal Kombat universe, such as images of iconic characters and locations, which have led fans to believe that an announcement is imminent. The studio’s history of teasing their fans with hints before a significant reveal only adds to the speculation.

When Kratos was revealed as an exclusive character for the PlayStation 3 version of NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat reboot, Xbox 360 fans may have wondered what exclusive was coming their way. As it turns out, it was nothing. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has revealed that NetherRealm also wanted to give Xbox 360 fans something to look forward to, but wasn’t able.
