Earlier in its history, the Ottoman Empire had sought to bridge the intellectual gap between Christian Europe and the Muslim world. European painters, scholar, and linguists could be found in the court of Mehmet too. But by the time Europe began to take a dominant role in world politics, the Ottoman Empire's mistrust of its Christian neighbors led to an anti intellectualism that prevented its continued growth.
