The Badain Jaran Desert is a desert located in northwestern China, mostly in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is the third largest desert in China, covering an area of about 49,000 square kilometers (19,000 square miles). The desert is known for its impressive sand dunes, some of which can reach heights of up to 500 meters (1,640 feet), making them among the tallest in the world. The region is also home to a number of lakes and wetlands, as well as several species of plants and animals that are adapted to desert conditions.
