A robbery suspect who was shot by a Houston police officer in the Greenspoint area Wednesday evening has died.

The shooting happened in the 2900 block of Broad Haven Drive, near Veteran's Memorial Drive, around 6 p.m.

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies and Houston police were conducting surveillance in the area as part of a joint operation due to the high volume of recently reported robberies in the area.

During their stakeout, they witnessed a man matching the description of one of the robbery suspects go into the Krazy Dollar Store, which had just been robbed on Saturday and Sunday.

Within minutes, they saw the man running out of the store, and officers moved in immediately to investigate.

After officers confirmed the store had been robbed, they began to look for the perpetrator.

When one of the officers spotted the armed suspect, he gave verbal commands, which the suspect ignored.

The officer opened fire, striking the suspect several times.

Officers immediately began to render aid when the suspect fell to the ground.

No officers were injured.

The suspect was transported to Northwest Medical Center in critical condition. On Thursday, HPD sent an update that the suspect had died.

Police believe he was around 19 or 20 years old.

As standard protocol, the officer who discharged his weapon will be placed on administrative duty until the investigation is complete.

Police said the officer is 26 years old and has been with the department for five years.

Body cam footage will be released within 30 days.
