Ludwig Wittgenstein, in full Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein, (born April 26, 1889, Vienna, Austria-Hungary [now in Austria]—died April 29, 1951, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England), Austrian-born British philosopher, regarded by many as the greatest philosopher of the 20th century. Wittgenstein’s two major works, Logisch-philosophische Abhandlung (1921; Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, 1922) and Philosophische Untersuchungen (published posthumously in 1953; Philosophical Investigations), have inspired a vast secondary literature and have done much to shape subsequent developments in philosophy, especially within the analytic tradition.

The British-Austrian genius studied in a wide range of philosophical areas, including logic, mathematics, ethics, the mind, and—most significantly—revolutionized how we interpret language.

Wittgenstein took a step back and claimed that the reality we see is defined and given meaning by the words we pick rather than holding that there is some sort of omnipotent and separate logic to the world independent of what we witness. Simply put, we create our own reality.
