The south to north running St. Johns River is 300+ miles long and at widest is 3 miles across. This is the location where it reaches open ocean and is mainly a shipping channel. Up River is wild and full of alligators and the banks are homes for wading birds and even monkeys. The St. Johns Water District has many free camping locations all across the St. Johns drainage area. The only requirement is to be smart enough to find where they are. That keeps many out. Those that complain about no free camping locations in Florida and run back to the western BLM, I guess didn't qualify. The Mayport Navy Base is the 3rd largest fleet concentration in the US. The helicopters were out practising water recovery of some kind into the late night hours, there was a full moon, so that may have been why, not a quiet operation!
