Perpetual licenses in IT: A Dying Breed or a Hidden Gem? (Episode 16)

Subscription and perpetual licenses are two models for software licensing today. In a lot of cases, we can choose between perpetual or subscription-based licensing - but not always. Subscription licenses allow users to pay a recurring fee for a specified period of time, typically monthly or annually. Perpetual licenses, on the other hand, require a one-time upfront payment for the software license, which can be used indefinitely.

The choice between subscription and perpetual licenses depends on various factors, including the user's budget, the software's usage frequency, and the software vendor's pricing structure. Subscription licenses might offer the flexibility of paying for only what is used, while perpetual licenses offer long-term cost savings for frequently used software.

Ultimately, the decision between subscription and perpetual licenses should be based on a thorough evaluation of the user's needs and goals, including their budget, frequency of use, and long-term plans for the software. But we're also firm believers that we should have the capability to choose perpetual and subscription-based models for everything in IT, and that subscription-based models can't be applied willy-nilly. Just as an example, we think that it's unacceptable to have a subscription-based service for airbags in your car or for your washing machine to - wash your stuff. And there are many more examples where this should be applied.
