Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was a mathematician and astronomer who proposed that the sun was stationary in the center of the universe and the earth revolved around it.

In order to eliminate Ptolemy's equant, a hypothetical point around which the celestial bodies appeared to follow Aristotle's requirement for the uniform circular motion of all celestial bodies, Copernicus decided that he could only accomplish his goal by using a heliocentric model.

Although Copernicus's heliocentric theory was very divisive at the time, it marked the beginning of a shift in how people perceived the world, and Copernicus came to be recognized as the father of the Scientific Revolution.

Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a heliocentric system, that the planets orbit around the Sun; that Earth is a planet which, besides orbiting the Sun annually, also turns once daily on its own axis; and that very slow changes in the direction of this axis account for the precession of the equinoxes.
