Our Huyro Peru Community: 11 Critically injured in Multi Family Van Crash

Our tiny community was devastated when a terrible van accident occurred on April 17 when a shared public transport collectivo crashed in a windy mountainous drop. Multiple families from our village lives were in chaos with 11 people hospitalized critical condition and some deaths.

They are the elders, mothers and children and all farming families from the high jungle where we live. These are the caretakers of sacred lands only 10 km from Machu Picchu and our family. They are humble, loving, open and know the meaning of community in the deepest sense.

There are still families in the hospital unable to pay for necessary surgeries to save their life, Multiple people are still in critical condition in Cuzco and Quillabamba hospitals. One is a single mother of an 11 year old girl who was also in the accident. She has multiple broken bones and they haven’t closed all of the internal bleeding. We do not want her daughter to be without a mom because she can’t pay for the bills.

This money won’t just help our Peruvian neighbors heal and could save their lives, but will show that they aren’t alone. They did absolutely everything they could for each other as donations poured in. The community stopped everything to fundraise and support each other. This took many people 2 weeks of fundraising in hot jungle sun door to door, in markets and other local events with incredibly high participation.

It was an enormous and loving action and broke our hearts to see the incredible coming together of the community, when it only was a drop in the bucket for their expenses of lost work and hospital bills and funeral costs.

When most people here only make 20 soles / 5 USD a day, the whole community giving half a days of their wages couldn’t cover the bills of these 11 families. This support will help with loss work and will affect hundreds of people because families rely on each other here and live in homesteads with multiple families and multiple generations. One person hurt negatively affects an entire family.

If we could raise $15,000 it means 11 families can cover hospital bills to get life saving surgeries and allow them to cover funeral costs, a tiny bit of lost wages. The entire community came to together with fundraising but even after most of the villagers donated they could only raise about $2,500 of this total cost, which has already been delivered to heartbroken the families (Covering only About 17% of their expenses)

The 5000 Sol / 1400 USD a person hospital bill is unfathomable for locals.

Every dollar will go to the families in need.

Nuestra pequeña comunidad quedó devastada cuando ocurrió un terrible accidente de camioneta el 17 de abril cuando un colectivo de transporte público compartido se estrelló en una montaña ventosa. Varias familias de la vida de nuestro pueblo estaban en caos con 11 personas hospitalizadas en estado crítico y algunas muertes.

Son los mayores, las madres y los niños y todas las familias campesinas de la selva alta donde vivimos. Estos son los cuidadores de tierras sagradas a solo 10 km de Machu Picchu y nuestra familia. Son humildes, cariñosos, abiertos y conocen el significado de comunidad en el sentido más profundo.

Todavía hay familias en el hospital que no pueden pagar las cirugías necesarias para salvar su vida. Múltiples personas siguen en estado crítico en los hospitales de Cuzco y Quillabamba. Una es madre soltera de una niña de 11 años que también estuvo en el accidente. Tiene varios huesos rotos y no han cerrado toda la hemorragia interna. No queremos que su hija se quede sin mamá porque no puede pagar las cuentas.

Este dinero no solo ayudará a sanar a nuestros vecinos peruanos y podría salvarles la vida, sino que también demostrará que no están solos. Hicieron absolutamente todo lo que pudieron el uno por el otro a medida que llegaban las donaciones. La comunidad detuvo todo para recaudar fondos y apoyarse mutuamente.

Fue una acción enorme y amorosa y nos rompió el corazón ver la increíble unión de la comunidad, cuando solo era una gota en el océano por sus gastos de trabajo perdido y facturas de hospital y costos funerarios.

Si pudiéramos recaudar $15,000, significa que 11 familias pueden cubrir las facturas del hospital para obtener cirugías que salvan vidas y permitirles cubrir los costos del funeral, una pequeña parte de los salarios perdidos. Toda la comunidad se unió para recaudar fondos, pero incluso después de que la mayoría de los aldeanos donaron, solo pudieron recaudar alrededor de $ 2,500 de este costo total, que ya se entregó a familias desconsoladas (cubriendo solo alrededor del 17% de sus gastos)
