Date – Wednesday, May 3rd - 2023 – St. Ansfrid

St. Ansfrid, Count of Brabant, led a successful military career before dedicating his life to God. He founded an abbey at Heiligenberg and a convent at Thorn, which were built with the financial support of his wife. Together, they agreed to live as brother and sister in perfect chastity. When he retired from his military career, he proclaimed his dedication to fighting for the glory of God and the conquest of souls. Ansfrid was later appointed Bishop of Utrecht, but he continued to take leave of his work to make retreats at one of the monasteries he had founded. He died in 1010 and was soon recognized for his saintly life.

The life of St. Ansfrid shows the unity of a life lived in continuous combat in both the spiritual and temporal spheres. He was a knight-errant fighting on behalf of the poor, widows and orphans for the love of Christ, and later, as a bishop, he fought for the salvation of souls. This attitude is in contrast with the pacifist mentality of our times that sees any combat, be it ideological or material, as evil in itself. The life of St. Ansfrid invites us to imitate his militancy and enjoy the fight for a superior cause, which is the cause of Our Lady.

St. Ansfrid, Pray for us.

Veni Sancte Spiritus
COME, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.
V. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Oremus:
O GOD, Who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that, by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
