Plans to expand capacity were already partially realized in the 1930s, when the LIRR made provisions for having six tracks going west from the Rockaway Beach Branch. The ten bridges built in this Depression Era capital program are still there, never used. But now the MTA is boxing them in, and apparently has other plans for the outside-track rights-of-way, making alterations at 63rd Drive for instance, that have rendered one of the bridges there impassable.
