The chief corner stone (The tenant farmers Matthew 21:33-45, Mark 12:1-12)
The chief corner stone (The tenant farmers Matthew 21:33-45, Mark 12:1-12)
Recently at our mine we had to build a thirteen-foot wall on 2 sides of our upgraded ventilation fan to help deflect the noise that the larger motor and blade caused. When beginning the project, I was amazed with the time and effort the block layers took to make sure that the corner where the two walls joined was perfect. I asked them about it, and they said that if they messed up this corner both walls would be off and the whole project may have to be done over. Jesus tells the religious elite of His time that the parable he had told of the tenant farmers refusing to accept and listen to the son of the vineyard owner was equivalent to them rejecting the chief corner stone. Verse 12 says that this infuriated the religious leader because they knew that Jesus was saying that they had rejected the truth to build their life upon the lies of men. I am not sure if they fully understood that Jesus was speaking of Himself as the chief corner stone on which all faith must be built, if it is built on anything else the building is doomed to fall.
The leaders of Jesus time decided that they didn’t want their foundation to be established on what God clearly ordained as the starting point. Jesus did not act like them, He did not teach like them, He did hang out with the people they hung out with, and He did not like their man-made bureaucracy and religious rules. If Jesus did not fit in their box, then they did not want anything to do with Him. They were kicking the chief corner stone to the side and replace it with a stone that allowed them to keep doing what they had always done. What they were building was doomed to fail because it would always be off balance and out of line with God’s plan. The same is true today if you are building on anything other than the foundation that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior of the world then you are off the mark. Acts 4:12 says that by no other name than Jesus shall someone be saved. Your hard work, your commitment, your intelligence, your personality, and the number of followers you have on social media can not save you. Only Jesus can. Make sure that you foundation is firm, and that Jesus is the chief corner stone of your life, if He is not then taking time to seek out the only hope that you have.
