LATEST NEWS: "Trump accuser praises 'The Apprentice' on witness stand"
E. Jean Carroll, a journalist and advice columnist, took the stand on Monday in her defamation lawsuit against former President Donald Trump. The lawsuit alleges that Trump raped her in a New York City department store in the mid-1990s and defamed her by calling her claims a "hoax." During her testimony, Carroll spoke about her admiration for Trump's former reality show, "The Apprentice," and also addressed a controversial Facebook post from 2012 in which she asked whether people would have sex with Trump for $17,000.
Carroll, who is now 79 years old, testified that she had been a fan of "The Apprentice" and had praised the show on Facebook in 2012, when it was still on the air. She said she was "very impressed" by the show and had enjoyed watching the contestants compete in a "witty competition" about something worthwhile. However, she also noted that she did not watch the part of the show where Trump fired people. Subscribe for more content like this.
Carroll explained that she had posted positively about the show because two of her friends had appeared on it and she wanted to show her support. However, she was also asked about a 2012 Facebook post in which she asked whether people would have sex with Trump for $17,000 and could keep their eyes closed during it. Carroll confirmed that she had written the post and explained that she had made several jokes about Trump because she believed it was better to laugh than cry.
Under questioning from her lawyer, Carroll also acknowledged that in the decades after the alleged attack at Bergdorf Goodman, she continued to shop at the store and was not afraid to enter it. This was in response to the defense's argument that Carroll's behavior after the alleged rape was inconsistent with someone who had been traumatized by the experience.
The lawsuit has been closely watched, as it is one of several legal battles facing Trump since he left office. Carroll's case is unique because Trump's statements about her were made while he was in office, which means that he cannot claim immunity from the lawsuit. In addition, the case has drawn attention to the issue of sexual assault and harassment, particularly in light of the #MeToo movement.
Carroll's testimony is expected to continue throughout the week, and the trial is expected to last for two weeks. If she wins the lawsuit, Carroll could be awarded damages and could force Trump to publicly apologize for his statements about her. However, even if she wins, it is unclear whether Trump would actually pay the damages or issue an apology, as he has a history of refusing to admit fault or apologize for his actions.
