“The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. A masterpiece of imagery that has become inextricably linked to its author, “The Raven” stands as a Platonic ideal in The Cave of American Gothic. I cannot recall when I first knew of the poem, but I do clearly remember when I first came to appreciate it—watching the brilliant yet comical adaptation on The Simpsons, narrated by James Earl Jones.
