DEION SANDERS TOLD Y'ALL! Colorado transfer purge!
We’ve seen roster overhauls, but this is starting to look like The Purge: Boulder edition. 18 kids entered the transfer portal on Monday, including WR Montana Lemonious-Craig, who was one of the stars of the spring game, and on Tuesday DT Jalen Sami entered the portal along with several others… .
Max Olsen has an article over at the Athletic about just how crazy the numbers really are. Colorado has now seen 51 scholarship players enter the portal since the end of the season… the next closest P5 program had 29. To put it into more context, the Buffs had 83 scholarship players at the start of the 22 season… only 19 are still on the roster as of Monday evening.
Sanders’ quotes have been… well, interesting, to say the least. After the sold out spring game Saturday, he said ““You all know that we’re gonna move on from some of the team members and we’re gonna reload and get some kids that we really identify with. So this process is gonna be quick, it’s gonna be fast, but we’re gonna get it done.” When asked about the kids that left before the spring game, he said, ““I didn’t kick ‘em out; they walked out. We’ve got to make some decisions. That’s gonna be on me now. That was on them. Now it’s on me.”
So who knows how many kids were asked to leave, how many left on their own, or even how many left that Coach Prime would have preferred to have stay?
He went on the Pat McAfee show and acted like he was surprised that the number was low, and talked about how this was the plan the whole time.
And this is the truth, right? It's not like he didn't warn the players ahead of time. He's let it be known from the moment he first spoke to them that basically everybody would be gone. He wanted to bring in players with a different, winning mindset. I believe he said “you can’t bring in the new furniture until you get rid of the old furniture.”
Of the 41 kids that started at some point last year, only 10 are still left on the team. Now, obviously, that can be a good thing, or… depending on who they bring in and what the depth situation looks like… that could be a bad thing. But the less players you have from a 1-11, maybe worst p5 I've ever seen, team, the better.
David Ubben of the Athletic, talked with multiple players that explained how they were basically cut from the team, and how it went down. But - let's look at both sides of this. We've legalized NIL. We're not supposed to think of them as “just kids” anymore. These are adults that didn't perform, and the new boss wants to bring in new guys that he has confidence in, rather than roll with the bunch that got the old coach fired. Things have changed drastically in this sport, and this is just another example of it. Deion is at least talking to these guys face to face and telling them what’s up - and while it’s not ideal, and it may not seem “fair,” it’s much more like a corporate environment, which is what college football has turned into. When everything is about money and viewers, etc, you know what goes on behind the scenes is going to be all about results as well… nobody ever wants to see how the sausage is made.
So… looking at the roster, the question now becomes whether or not Deion can bring in enough good players to be competitive. The most important positions are going to be on the line of scrimmage, where they lost all 9 defensive linemen and 8 of 14 offensive linemen. Losing this many players is just absurd… but I’m not going to argue with what he’s doing. I’m sure he has a plan - and if he doesn’t, he’s doing a good job of convincing people he does.
So yeah, there’s hype around what Prime is doing, just because we’ve never seen anything like it. But trying to fill in the line of scrimmage with impact players? That doesn’t seem likely to happen. And people are starting to understand what all this means, as their early win total opened at 4.5 and has been bet down to 3.5 already. So while it may not necessarily work this year, it’s a full reset that could pay dividends going forward.
