The Pilgrim
Charlie Chaplin made a lot of silent films which would go on to inspire future comedians and comedy movies in general, including this two-reel movie which would become a favorite among film aficionados. Critic Andre Bazin considered this one of the ten greatest films of all time; Bazin is perhaps best known for his work on the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma, as well as his contribution to film theory such as auteur theory. That all said, the Pilgrim is now more than 95 years old and has fallen into the public domain, making it one of the best free comedy movies available.A silent film directed by Charlie Chaplin and released in 1923 by the First National Film Company.

The Pilgrim, an escaped convict, steals a minister's clothes to replace his prison uniform. At a train station, he encounters an eloping couple who want him to marry them. The woman's father shows up and takes her away.
