The 1980s are calling and want their revisionist history back! Historian Stephen Shoemaker is the latest to make the preposterous argument that the Hijaz region (of Mecca and Medina) was too remote and barren for its inhabitants to have any knowledge of Late Antiquity religious culture or for a religious movement based there to know anything about sea-faring, grain, grapes, olives, date palms, pomegranates, fishing, sheep, goats, cows, oxen, camels, mules, donkeys, and horses, all of which are mentioned in the Quran. Therefore, post-conquest Arabs must have written it in the Levant. That's the implication of his argument. Andrew Hammond breaks it down.
